JONESBORO — A registered nurse has been charged with the sexual assault of a patient while she was under the influence of intoxicants.

Danielle Denise Gates, 28, of Atlanta made her first appearance Tuesday in Clayton County Magistrate Court. She was a nurse at Anchor Hospital in College Park at the time of the alleged incident. State records show she holds a valid nursing license.

Magistrate Judge Richard Brown set a $10,000 bond on the charge and appointed her a public defender.

Brown told Gates she is accused of taking a male patient from therapy back to his room March 27. He said she was "intoxicated" when she allegedly hugged and kissed the patient on his neck and fondled him inappropriately.

Brown said surveillance cameras recorded Gates escorting the patient to his room from therapy. The patient also reported the alleged incident to hospital staff as soon as it occurred, said Brown.

Brown told Gates he took into consideration the fact she surrendered on the charge when he set the bond amount. Brown set a May 14 preliminary hearing. She said she didn't know if she can make bond.

Gates seemed shaken during the brief hearing but told Brown she had no questions.
