SMYRNA — Three Clayton County students will get a little help Monday from Congressman David Scott (D-Ga.) and his wife, Alfredia, to pay college tuition.

The Scotts will host their annual Congressional Black Caucus Foundation scholarships ceremony at 10 a.m., at his Smyrna District Office, 888 Concord Road, Suite 100.

Clayton County students Mylon Craig, Aspen Evans and Sharlee will be among the scholarship recipients, Scott’s office announced.

Craig, a graduate of Jonesboro High School, will attend the Georgia Institute of Technology this fall. Evans, a Mt. Zion High School graduate, will attend Savannah College of Art & Design. Taylor, a North Atlanta High School graduate, will attend the University of California at Berkeley.

Although David Scott will be hosting the ceremony at his office, this has traditionally been more of his wife’s show as the scholarships are funded by the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Program.

The annual ceremony is traditionally marked with much fanfare. The Scotts will speak to attendees, and each recipient will address the audience about what the scholarship means to them.

They also get their pictures taken with their families and the Scotts. The number of family members attending for some students can sometimes be large as mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings showing up to share their special moment.

The congressman’s staff provides them with a buffet lunch.
