Hip hop pioneers to headline Riverdale seafood festival

RIVERDALE — How fast can you say “A hip hop, hippie to the hippie, the hip, hip a hop and you don’t stop a rock it”?

Can you do it to “the bang bang boogie, say up jump the boogie, to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat”?

The lyrics to the Sugarhill Gang’s legendary 1979 rap song, “Rapper’s Delight,” have become a sort of old school hip hop gospel. Even a grandmother spouted off the tongue-twisting opening lines in the 1998 Adam Sandler film, “The Wedding Singer.”

Riverdale officials have announced the hip hop group, which now uses “Rapper’s Delight” as its name, will headline the city’s third annual Seafood and Beer Festival Aug. 31 at noon at The Amphitheater at the Riverdale Town Center, 7210 Church St.

In addition to one of the first groups to release a Top 40 rap song, the musical lineup will include Raheem The Dream, Drakkar & An Experience, Mike Delaney and Antoine Knight.

The city is touting the event’s menu as including “delicious fried fish, scrumptious scallops, delectable conch [and] savory crab legs” on promotional materials. Vendors and kids play areas are also expected to be available at the festival.

Admission will be $5, but children under 12 get in for free.
