Weekend features multiple library activities

JONESBORO — Clayton County children can hit the libraries for some fun this weekend before they have to hit the books at school next week.

Local libraries have several activities planned for this weekend, such as movie viewings and crafts. The activities will kick-off Friday at 2 p.m. with a viewing of “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” at the headquarters branch, 865 Battle Creek Road in Jonesboro. Saturday activities will include:

The “Music to my Eyes: A Musical Film Series” from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Forest Park branch, 4812 West St.

“Butterfly Pop Art,” where children will make pictures of butterflies using crayons and math grids, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m., at the Riverdale branch, 420 Valley Hill Road.

A showing of the movie, “Barnyard: The Original Party Animals,” from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Lovejoy branch, 1721 McDonough Road.

Other activities slated for the final weekend of kids’ summer break include:

Friday

• The Brookdale Dine and Dance Club will meet at 6 p.m. at the Jim Huie Recreation Center, 9045 Tara Blvd., Jonesboro. The group is for residents over 55 and visitors are asked to bring a dish for a potluck dinner held at the beginning of the meeting. After dinner, at about 6:45 p.m., attendees will begin dancing. Admission is $5 for the dancing.

Forest Park’s Movie Night in Starr Park will be held at 8 p.m. in Starr Park, which is behind the Forest Park Recreation Center, 803 Forest Parkway. The movie to be shown at this free event is “Let it Shine.” If the viewing is rained out, an Aug. 16 rain date has been set aside.

Riverdale’s Friday Night Flicks will be held at 9 p.m. at the Riverdale Town Center amphitheater, 7200 Church St. The movie to be shown at this free event is “Ice Age 4: Continental Drift.”

Saturday

Storytime with Ms. Julie will be held at Barnes and Noble, 1939 Mount Zion Road in Morrow at 11 a.m. Participants will sing songs and read a story together.

Nook Q&A will be held at Barnes and Noble in Morrow at 4 p.m. Nook enthusiasts and newbies will learn how to better use the mobile reading device at this free event.

Movie Under the Stars will be held at 9 p.m., at Clayton County International Park, 2300 Ga. 138 in Jonesboro. The movie to be shown at this free event is “Jack The Giant Slayer.”

Sunday

Wordsmith Writers of Clayton County will be held at Barnes and Noble in Morrow at 2 p.m. Author M.J. Kane will lead a discussion on how writers can put their ideas into words and get published. The event is free.
