Three agencies investigate student shooting

MORROW — Police officers from Morrow, Lake City and Clayton State University are investigating the apparent random shooting of a college student early Sunday morning, said officials.

CSU spokesman John Shiffert said the three departments are working together to identify the shooter in the incident reported Sunday about 1:45 a.m. at Clayton Station Apartments. The student was shot in the ankle and under his right arm, he said. The student was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was in good condition, said Shiffert.

Shiffert said the student and a friend, who is not a student, returned to the apartment complex after work. The pair parked near a group of about 10 people, who were apparently strangers to them.

The two told police they got out of the car, did not address the group and began walking toward the apartment building.

“While they were walking, shots were fired, apparently by one of the individuals in the large group,” said Shiffert. “The Clayton State student was hit in the ankle by what was apparently a stray bullet. He and his co-worker then ran inside the apartments.”

After an additional investigation, Shiffert said, the student discovered a second wound under his right arm.

The group of people apparently scattered after the shots were fired and police have no information on their identities.

Shiffert said the university’s student body, faculty and staff were notified of the incident about 3 a.m. by email and text messaging.

“At that time, the Office of Public Safety stated that ‘the scene is now safe and secure by local and area police,’” he said.

Shiffert said Monday that the campus police department called in help from Morrow and Lake City.

“The Clayton State Office of Public Safety has requested additional resources from these two surrounding police departments,” said Shiffert. “The agencies are currently providing enhanced patrols in the area of the Clayton Station Apartments.”

Anyone with information about the shooting should contact one of the police agencies investigating the incident.
