Candidate qualifying looms for five cities

JONESBORO — Five Clayton County cities will sign up candidates for 12 elected offices next week.

Qualifying begins Monday in every city except Lake City and Lovejoy. Lake City, which has two council seats up for grabs this year, won’t hold its qualifying period until Sept. 2-4, said officials at the town’s municipal hall. Lovejoy has no seats up for election this year.

Forest Park and Jonesboro tie for the most seats open this year. Forest Park has the county’s only mayoral election this year, plus two council seats are set to be chosen. Meanwhile, Jonesboro has three at-large council seats up for grabs.

In Forest Park, the Ward 1 council seat held by Tommy Smith, and the vacant Ward 2 seat, are up.

The council seats in Jonesboro which are to be chosen are occupied by Councilmen Joe Compton, Clarence Mann and Pat Sebo.

Morrow may face a situation where it has no incumbents seeking re-election. The seats held by Councilmen Bob Huie and Virlyn Slaton are up for election.

Huie recently said he probably would not seek another term. Slaton, who has missed most of the council meetings held this year because of health issues, said his decision to run again will depend on how his physical therapy goes. He is recovering from hip replacement surgery.

Riverdale and College Park each have two council seats up for election.

In Riverdale, wards 1 and 3 are up for election. They are held by councilwomen Cynthia Stamps-Jones and Wanda Wallace.

In College Park, the council seats for wards 2 and 4 will be chosen this year. Those seats are held by councilmen Joe Carn and Charles E. Phillips Sr., respectively.

Some cities will use the full week for qualifying, while others use half of the week. College Park, Forest Park, Jonesboro and Morrow will sign-up candidates from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each day. Riverdale’s qualifying hours are 8 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. until 5 p.m.
