JONESBORO — Clayton County commission Chairman Jeff Turner is asking residents to help him bring Christmas joy to children in the care of Clayton County’s Court-Appointed Special Advocates program.

Turner has conducted a toy drive on his own for the Ambassadors Behind CASA program for several years, dating back to when he was the county’s police chief. Every year, the number of toys he brings in for the program has grown. Last year, hundreds of toys were donated and the haul was enough to fill a large boardroom.

Children in CASA’s care have often been abused or neglected and the program acts as advocates of their needs in court proceedings.

“I just wanted to give back to the community and saw this as a great opportunity to do so,” said Turner. “And through the help of many of the officers from the police department and a lot of my community partners, we have been able over the years to provide money and toys to needy families and kids.”

But, that was before Turner was the county’s chairman. Now that he has that title, he hopes to use his title to provide a bigger bounty of gifts for the children.

Turner will host a holiday fundraiser and toy drive event Dec. 12, from 6 until 9 p.m., at Skyboxx Restaurant and Sports Bar, 2180 Mt. Zion Parkway, in Morrow. Anyone bringing a toy is asked to leave it unwrapped. All monetary and toy donations will go to the Ambassadors Behind CASA program, he said.

“What ABCs does is it takes the money and then they take the families and buy either additional toys or food,” said Turner.

Anyone who cannot make it to the toy drive and holiday fundraiser can bring an unwrapped toy to the Clayton County Board of Commissioners office, 112 Smith St., in Jonesboro. Turner said they need to make their donations before Dec. 18.

Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation can also call Turner’s office at 770-472-8122 to set up a way to do so.
