STOVALL: A football season in review, and a brief look ahead

The great thing about sports predictions is that you get to sound smart, and as if you have some inside information while making them, and then your intelligence is either proven right or wrong by season’s end.

Football season is over, and I figured, what better way to tie a nice, neat bow around an intriguing 2013, than to revisit my best case-worst case scenarios column from July.

I hit the nail on the head with some, and didn’t whiff too badly on any.

Last year when the season ended, I followed suit of the ESPNs of the world, and immediately gave my best stab at a “Way Too Early Top Five” for 2013. Why am I not doing that now? Because with so many moving parts and changing variables with so many of our teams, it is way, way too early to even begin formulating an intelligent opinion on what 2014 will bring.

But if I were forced to take a stab at predicting the future for 2014 anyway, I’d do it with one word.

Change.

This much we know: With a huge glut of senior standouts graduating, at least five coaching changes, one athletic director change, unfinished Georgia High School Association reclassification looming and an entirely new school (Hampton in Henry) coming into the mix, things are going to look very, very different on the scene by the time spring ball arrives.

Suffice it to say, 2013 was an exciting season, loaded with awesome storylines, a couple of surprise athletes — Dutchtown’s Brandon Robertson comes to mind — and a couple of surprise teams — Eagle’s Landing comes to mind.

But I have a feeling we won’t have to wait until next summer to get our fill of football news. It’s going to be an interesting offseason.
