MORROW — Sixteen students were honored at McGarrah Elementary School’s National Junior Beta Club Induction Ceremony Thursday.
The club is an independent, nonprofit, educational youth organization that recognizes and promotes academic achievement, character, leadership and service to others.
Mayor J. B. Burke was one of the event’s speakers. He talked to the inductees about following through on their dreams in life.
“You’ve got to have a dream,” Burke said. “If you plan your dream, you will be successful. I can promise you that.”
Rev. Edward Cochran of Floyd Chapel Baptist Church in Stockbridge was guest speaker.
Cochran began by reciting the National Beta Club motto. “Let us lead by serving others,” he said.
“Leadership and character is vital to academics and being a productive part of society,” he continued.
Cochran talked to students about how they must build a strong foundation while in school in order to be successful citizens.
“We as community leaders, we’re depending on you,” he said. “We’re counting on you (as future leaders). You’re becoming part of a group that spans the time of many years. We want to honor you this morning and say that we are so very proud of your achievement.”
This year’s inductees include: Santiago Aguirre, Angel Benn, Tania Bolanos, Ricardo Castillo, Aleyha Crockett, Danny Huynh, Tracy Huynh, Ezinne Ifi, Keonna Johnson, Jennifer Mendoza, Shanti Pham, Phat Phan, Jaliyah Randle, Janiah Roberson, David Vu and Brendon White.
