HAMPTON — Former major leaguer Brian Jordan has shown his prowess on the field but is now demonstrating another passion. He recently gave the gift of literacy to youngsters in Clayton County.

Jordan is an award-winning sports analyst and a former two-sport professional athlete — with the Atlanta Braves as an outfielder and the Atlanta Falcons as a defensive back. He is also a children’s book author with published titles, “I Told You I Can Play,” “Overcoming the Fear of the Baseball” and “Time-Out For Bullies.”

The latter title was given in bulk recently to students at Hawthorne Elementary School in Clayton County.

Jordan and supporters of his nonprofit Brian Jordan Foundation visited the school this month to speak with students and their parents about the importance of reading and its effects on their lives. His foundation donated more than 400 books to the students.

He said on his foundation’s website that he is passionate about preparing young children for reading and motivating school-age children to read regularly.

School officials said that, as important as Jordan’s campaign for literacy was his message against bullying — first rendered in his latest book, “Time Out for Bullies,” but reinforced during his school assembly presentation this month.

Jordan’s book addresses the issue of bullying and how to handle some situations of bullying. Find other book titles at www.brianjordanfoundation.com.
