Area players make all-region team

Players from the Southern Crescent dominated the All-Region 4-AAAAA team, which was released earlier this week.

Six girls players from the area were named to the 10-player first team all-region squad that was selected by the region coaches. Forest Park, which clinched the Region 4-AAAAA, Div. A title, had the most with three players on the first team.

Juniors Kayla Potts and Tiffany Wilson of Forest Park was joined by sophomore Breasia McElrath. Potts recently rejoined the team after missing an entire season with a ACL injury.

Wilson also missed last season with a knee injury.

Gabby Seilor of McIntosh was named the girls region player of the year.

Rounding out the first team from the area was Moneshia Dyer of Mundy’s Mill, Treva Hickey of Union Grove, and Lakia Sims of Drew.

On the boys’ side, J.R. Holder of Mount Zion was named the region’s top player. The senior who signed with Jacksonville University has been instrumental in leading the Bulldogs to the Region 4-AAAAA, Div. A title. Last season, Mount Zion only won four games, but enters the region tournament as the favorite.

Joining Holder on the first team is teammate Cody Simmons, who averages a double-double.

Rounding out the first team from the area is Sean Williams of Union Grove, Brandon Clyde of Drew, and Brandon Williams of Forest Park.

The region tournament starts on Saturday at Ola. The top four teams from the tournament will advance to the state playoffs. The championship and consolation games will be on Feb. 15 starting at 4 p.m.
