Authurine Hazel McMahan

Authurine Hazel McMahan, our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother leaves a legacy of love, creativity, and devotion to her family and God. Authurine entered into her heavenly home on Feb. 16, 2013, at the age of 83.

Authurine was born on Aug. 26, 1929, to the late Herman and Hazel Dean in Ducktown, Tenn. Authurine was also preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Doyle Ray McMahan, and son, Michael Ray McMahan; sister, Vera Sue Dean; and brother, Robert (Bob) Dean.

Authurine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Herb Oakes of McDonough; grand-daughter, Kimberly Oakes of Jackson; great-grandson, Mathew Allen of Jackson; sister, Loretta Barnes of Chattanooga, Tenn.; brother, Herman Dean of LaFayette, Ga.; brother, Gene Dean of Chattanooga; and nieces and nephews.

Authurine graduated from County High School in Ducktown. She relocated to Atlanta in support of her husband’s move with United Airlines in 1967. It was during this time that Authurine demonstrated her many creative talents through the wall plaques, needlepoints, and quilts that she completed in addition to the beautiful flowers that she raised in her gardens. She was a member of the Rock Baptist Church as a dedicated worker in the kitchen during Wednesday night suppers.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. at Horis A. Ward Funeral Home Fairview Chapel. Interment will follow at the Fairview Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted or contributions can be made to Vistas Community Connection, c/o Vistas Innovative Hospice Care, 1575 Northside Drive, Suite 375, Atlanta, Ga. 30318. The family would like to extend thanks and sincere appreciation to the caregivers and staff of Benton House, Stockbridge, Ga., and Vistas Hospice for their devotion and kindness.
