Parks department planning ‘Seuss’ celebration

“I can read in pickle color too.”

Clayton County Parks and Recreation will throw an early birthday party Friday night for the man who gave the world two things, a grinch and a town full of whos.

Saturday would have been the 109th birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, who was better known to generations of children as “Dr. Seuss.” Each year, the National Education Association organizes Read Across America Day to commemorate Seuss’ works, and this year’s celebration will be observed on Friday.

This will also mark the second year Clayton County’s parks and recreation department will participate in the celebration.

A “Dr. Seuss Night” will be held from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Jim Huie Recreation Center, located at 9045 Tara Blvd., in Jonesboro. Pre-kindergarten through first grade-aged children, as well as children from daycare centers across the county, are invited to attend the event, which will feature storytellers and guest readers who will read some of Dr. Seuss’ works.
