Baby Easton Charles Buchanan was born at 1:51 a.m. at Southern Regional Hospital, making him the firstborn baby of 2013 in Clayton County.

— After almost nine hours at Southern Regional Hospital, Bianca Buchanan burst into tears the moment she laid eyes on her baby son — the firstborn of the new year in Clayton County.

It had been a grueling process, as she fought critically-high blood pressure and a loss of 1,200 milliliters of blood, leaving her exhausted with blue lips.

But despite the complications, Buchanan gave birth to a healthy baby boy at 1:51 a.m. Jan. 1, whom she named Easton Charles Buchanan. He weighed in at 9 pounds, 5 ounces.

Buchanan, 18, from Locust Grove said it was love at first sight.

“When they opened up her gown for the first skin to skin contact, that’s when she got emotional,” said new grandmother Valerie Buchanan. “It was really nice. It’s hard to describe. It’s a very spiritual moment.”

Bianca Buchanan said she owes thanks to her delivery nurse and doctor for their prayers and for keeping her calm throughout the birthing process, despite scary circumstances.

“I was really nervous,” she said. “My sister had my nephew and I was in the room when a friend of mine had her daughter, and both of their experiences weren’t too pleasant. Both of them felt everything so I was pretty scared. That was the one thing I was scared about, that I was going to feel it, but I didn’t so I was glad.”

Buchanan said she can’t remember much of the birthing process and it has been driving her crazy. She felt like she had an out of body experience, which can be attributed to the severe loss of blood.

“I never even went over to him after he was born,” said Valerie Buchanan. “I heard him cry and all the nurses were around him and her best friend was over there. I couldn’t leave her. I was scared, although I don’t panic. I panic on the inside, but when it was all over with that’s when I started crying.”

Following Easton’s new year delivery, Bianca Buchanan was surrounded by friends and family welcoming their newest family member into the world.

Buchanan said she is thrilled to have the first baby of 2013, and her New Year’s resolution is to be a good mother for Easton as a single parent with the love and support from her tight-knit family.

“Happy New Year,” she said.
