Lego League returning to Clayton State

— The First Lego League Super Regional Qualifier will return to the campus of Clayton State University Jan. 12.

Specifically, the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences will once again be hosting the First Lego League Super Regional Qualifier in the James M. Baker University Center, largely on Main Street and the Commons Area.

The event will run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., with Jarrett Terry, CIMS assistant dean for Undergraduate Advisement and Student Services, heading up the organization of the event.

The competitions during the day will take place from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., and from 12:50 p.m. until 3 p.m., with the presentation of awards from 3:50 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Lego League is an international program that encourages hands-on robotic activities and designed to get children excited about science and technology.

Each team is allowed a coach and maximum of 10 players between the ages of 9 and 14. Teams have 8 weeks from September to analyze their problem, design, program and test an autonomous robot to complete the project.

The competition also requires teams to complete a research project relevant to the project’s theme.

“We’ve hosted First Lego League competitions here I think twice previously,” said Clayton State University spokesman John Shiffert. “Other than the fact that the Baker Center is a great venue for a competition like this, and it’s a really neat event, it’s amazing what these kids can come up with.”

“It’s a win-win for both Clayton State and the participants in that it exposes the kids to a university setting, specifically in the STEM area - which you have to figure they’re interested in, in the first place - and it brings a large number of bright potential college students to the Clayton State campus,” added Shiffert.
