JONESBORO The Clayton County Board of Education voted to give thousands of dollars to a controversial former superintendent Monday without much public discussion.
The board voted 7-2 to pay ex-Superintendent Edmond Heatley $8,333.34 as his bonus for the 2011-2012 school year. The amount is equal to one-third of the total $25,000 he was eligible to receive as an annual bonus.
Heatley resigned last fall to pursue a failed bid to become superintendent of Berkeley (Calif.) Unified Schools. Board Chairwoman Pamela Adamson said the board had been negotiating the payment with Heatley for an unspecified amount of time.
“This finishes out our contractual obligation to Dr. Heatley,” Adamson said.
Although Adamson made a statement on the payment, no other board member publicly discussed the matter. However, she said it was one of several items board members discussed during a one-hour executive session earlier in the evening.
A review of an audio recording of the board meeting shows Adamson never called for a public discussion of the matter after a motion to make the payment was made and seconded.
Board members Jessie Goree and Charlton Bivins cast the lone votes against the payment.

........ It's no wonder why this school system in sinking in debt.
..I know that $8,333.34 dollars is not very much to some, but it is when the lights are turned off.
