Wade Starr may become interim Housing Authority director

Hired Thursday as contractor to learn the ropes

— Controversial former County Manager Wade Starr is six weeks away from becoming the interim leader of the Housing Authority of Clayton County.

The Housing Authority Board voted Thursday night to hire Starr as an "independent contractor" who will work alongside Executive Director Linda Valentine for the next six weeks.

During that time, he will learn the authority's operations and procedures from Valentine, who is preparing to retire after 19 years with the group.

Housing Authority attorney Kirby Glaze said the move is being made with the expectation that the board will name Starr as interim executive director.

Starr will be paid $1,000 per week as a contractor.

The vote came after the board met for approximately two hours in executive session, including more than hour with Starr.

Housing Authority Board Chairman Curtis Green said the board decided to hire Starr "because he was available."

The Clayton County Board of Commissioners terminated Starr's county manager contract and abolished the position in early January.
