Deal to face GOP re-election challenger

DALTON — Clayton County Republicans will have the option next year of letting Gov. Nathan Deal represent their party in next year’s gubnatorial election, or of turning to Dalton Mayor David Pennington.

Pennington filed paperwork Tuesday to begin campaigning as a Republican candidate for governor, his campaign announced. It’s an unusual move since sitting governors are not typically challenged for their party’s nomination when seeking re-election. Pennington’s move allows him to begin fundraising for his campaign.

“Today, I am taking the first steps in this race,” said Pennington, “I look forward to growing my campaign ... and to bringing real leadership to the Governor’s Office that will improve our economy, improve management of our budget, promote our values, and return Georgia to greatness.”

The Pennington campaign has launched a website, www.davidforgeorgia.com, and accounts on Facebook and Twitter.
