Jonesboro holding special vote on radio purchase

— Police in Jonesboro may soon get a new radio system to meet new federal communications regulations.

The Jonesboro City Council will hold a called meeting Monday at 6 p.m. to vote on the purchase of a 700 MGH radio system. Mayor Joy Day said the city is going in with the county on the purchase, but she said Jonesboro will have to spend $400,000 on new base unit radios and laptop computers that are designed to the work with the system.

“We’re going to have to figure out where we’re going to get the funding from,” said Day. “It’s probably going to come out of our reserve fund.”

The Federal Communications Commission is requiring all public safety agencies switch to the new frequency. Day said Jonesboro’s public works and code enforcement departments will also use the new radio system.

The meeting will take place in the council chambers at the Jonesboro Police Department headquarters at 170 South Main St.
