JONESBORO — Clayton County Senior Services Director Mary Byrd has been arrested and charged with bribery and 13 counts of forgery, according to jail records.

Byrd has been on unpaid administrative leave since last week, said Clayton County Commission Chairman Jeff Turner.

Turner said she was placed on leave when an audit revealed discrepancies in a county bank account.

Byrd, 56, of Fayetteville was arrested on 13 counts of forgery in the fourth degree and one count of bribery, jail records show.

Clayton County police Officer Eddie Soto said detectives executed search warrants at Byrd's house and the Senior Services Center Thursday. Arrest warrants were issued Thursday and Byrd surrendered to the Clayton County Jail Friday afternoon, said Soto.

Byrd is due to make her first appearance in Clayton County Magistrate Court Saturday morning, according to records.

Soto said other details are not being released because of the ongoing investigation.
