JONESBORO A worldwide community service group is coming to Jonesboro.
Representatives of Lions Club International will visit the city Thursday to host an organizational meeting designed to help launch a chapter in the county seat, said Mayor Joy Day Monday night. The meeting will take place at 11:45 a.m. at Jonesboro United Methodist Church, 142 South Main St.
Lions Club International has 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members in 207 countries. Membership is open to men and women and several Lions Club go on to sponsor Alpha Leo Clubs at a high school in their area.
Jonesboro would be the only city located entirely in Clayton County that has a Lions Club, according to the group’s website. College Park is listed as having a chapter, but most of the city is located in Fulton County and the city’s chapter meets on that side of the county line.
The other closest existing Lions Club chapters listed on the international group’s website are in Atlanta, Griffin, Jackson, McDonough and Peachtree City.
