Roger William Atkins

Roger William Atkins, of Jonesboro, Georgia, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on June 7, 2013, at age 74.

Roger was born in 1938 in Ft. Lewis, Washington, the only son of the late Captain William David "Bill" Atkins and Madeline Schueller Atkins.

Roger's early years as the son of an Army officer allowed him to experience living abroad in Japan and Germany,

and in several other U.S. cities, before settling in Columbus, Mississippi in 1957.  Roger attended Mississippi State University, where he studied engineering.  Roger served honorably in the United States Air Force.  While stationed in Savannah, Georgia, Roger discovered a 1932 Ford coupe, which would become his life long hobby and passion.  On July 4, 1963, he met and fell in love with Judy Johnston, of Columbus, Mississippi.  They married on September 4, 1965 and were the parents of two daughters.  Roger and Judy have been long time residents of Jonesboro, Georgia and were one of the first parishioners of Saint Philip Benizi Catholic Church.

His professional career was focused on mechanical engineering, and he retired from Niagara National Corporation in 2008.

Roger was devoted to his family, friends and church where he regularly volunteered with the Saint Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.

Roger will always be remembered for being a kind, funny, generous, intellectually curious and loving man.  He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Judy; daughter Kelly Atkins of Franklin, Georgia; daughter Erin Atkins of Washington, D.C.; grandson Will Lewis of Charleston, South Carolina; grandson Trent Lewis of McDonough, Georgia; and stepmother Florence Atkins of Columbus, Mississippi.  Roger also leaves behind an extended family of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews who loved him immensely.

The family hosted a visitation on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 from 6-8pm at Ford Stewart Funeral Home in Jonesboro, Georgia. The funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 11am at Saint Philip Benizi Catholic Church.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society of St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church.
