Sports staff wins nine awards

The Clayton News Daily and Henry Daily Herald sports staff won nine awards from two news organizations.

During separate awards ceremonies for the Georgia Press Association and the Georgia Sports Writers Association, The Clayton News Daily won first place for its 2012 High School Football preview section.

At the GSWA banquet, which was held in Marietta, the sports staff swept the column writing category with former staffer Brian Paglia taking first place, sports editor Derrick Mahone placing second and current sports writer Gabriel Stovall winning third place.

The paper also placed second for Best Sports Section while Stovall was second in Best Local Feature Story.

Paglia, who is now the sports editor at The Forsyth County News, won the Furman Bisher Award, after taking first in best feature, local news and column writing.

At the GPA awards banquet in St. Simon Island, the sports staff was first in headline writing and third in sports section and pages. Paglia won five other awards at the GPA ceremonies.
