‘Steel Magnolias’ hits the stage

— The curtain will rise on six women playing gals from northeast Louisiana this weekend.

The Front Porch Players will give two performances of “Steel Magnolias” Friday and Saturday in Jonesboro. The acting troupe is sponsored by Historical Jonesboro/Clayton County Inc., in an effort to bring small theater back to Clayton County.

It is just one of several events taking place in Clayton County this weekend. The full list of events includes:

Friday

The Brookdale Dine and Dance Club will meet at 6 p.m. at the Jim Huie Recreation Center, 9045 Tara Blvd., Jonesboro. The group is for residents over 55 and visitors are asked to bring a dish for a potluck dinner held at the beginning of the meeting. After dinner, at about 6:45 p.m., attendees will begin dancing. Admission is $5 for the dancing.

The Front Porch Players will perform “Steel Magnolias” at 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Jonesboro, 1842 Lake Jodeco Road. Reserved ticket prices are $15.75 for adults, $12.75 for seniors and $10.75 for children. General admission prices are $12.75 for adults, $10.75 for seniors and $8.75 for children. Saturday

A youth and adult fishing derby will be hosted by Clayton County Parks and Recreation from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Clayton County International Park, 2300 Ga. 138. It costs $5 to participate.

The Clayton County Board of Health’s Employee Yard Sale will be held from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Board of Health building, 1117 Battle Creek Road in Jonesboro.

The Front Porch Players will perform “Steel Magnolias” at 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Jonesboro, 1842 Lake Jodeco Road.

The city of Riverdale will host a concert by the SOS Band, Con Funk Shun and Christopher Williams as part of its South City Concert Series at 8 p.m. at The Amphitheater at the Riverdale Town Center, 7200 Church St. Tickets are $45 for V.I.P. seats, $35 for the terrace and $25 for general admission if purchased at www.riverdaleculture.com. Tickets are an additional $10 if purchased at the door.
