LOVEJOY Is the Gerald Matthews Complex America’s favorite park? That will be up to Clayton County residents to decide.
The complex is participating in Coca-Cola’s “America Is Your Park” contest where it could win up to $100,000 in recreation grants and the “America’s Favorite Park” title. The contest is ongoing until July 15.
“The company is committed to being a part of the solution to obesity,” the Atlanta-based soft drink company announced on its website. “So they set a goal to inspire as many as 3 million people to have fun and get active in parks, on beaches, in gyms and recreation centers around the country this summer. America Is Your Park is just one of the ways Coca-Cola is helping to improve the health of our communities.”
There are 8,590 parks across the country participating in the contest and the Lovejoy-based complex is far behind the competition with 17 votes, according to Coke’s website.
The first-place park is Veterans Memorial Park in Moore, Okla., with 16,874 votes. The No. 25 park is Oak Park in Montgomery, Ala. It has received 399 votes.
Residents can vote for the park in three ways. The first is to log onto www.coke.com/parks on a computer or smart phone and cast a vote. Each vote counts once in this method and people can only vote once daily. They can also “check-in” once a day at the park using the social media app “Foursquare.” Each check-in counts as five votes for the park.
The third method is to log fitness activities on the MapMyFitness iPhone app. The park will receive 10 votes when a person logs at least 20 minutes of fitness activities on the app.
