Summer begins as ‘Steel Magnolias’ ends

— This weekend will bring the final chances to see the Front Porch Players’ production of “Steel Magnolias.”

The Jonesboro-based acting troupe will perform the play about six gals from northeast Louisiana Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Reserved ticket prices are $15.75 for adults, $12.75 for seniors and $10.75 for children. General admission prices are $12.75 for adults, $10.75 for seniors and $8.75 for children. The performances are not the only activities going on this weekend, which marks the official beginning of summer. The University of Georgia’s Clayton County Extension Office will launch its 2013 farmer’s market Saturday. Other activities includes a pair of cheerleading and football camps, swimming, painting and the public viewing of a classic family film in Riverdale.

Friday

The Brookdale Dine and Dance Club will meet at 6 p.m. at the Jim Huie Recreation Center, 9045 Tara Blvd., Jonesboro. The group is for residents over 55 and visitors are asked to bring a dish for a potluck dinner held at the beginning of the meeting. After dinner, at about 6:45 p.m., attendees will begin dancing. Admission is $5 for the dancing.

A Family Swim Night will be hosted by the city of Forest Park from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m., at the Starr Park outdoor pool. It costs $3 per person and the price includes a hot dog, chips and a drink. Starr Park is behind the Community Recreation Building, 803 Forest Parkway. The swim nights will continue each Friday for several weeks.

The Front Porch Players will perform “Steel Magnolias” at 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Jonesboro, 1842 Lake Jodeco Road.

“The Wizard of Oz” will be shown from 9 p.m. until 11 p.m., at the Riverdale Town Center amphitheater, 7200 Church St., as part of the city’s “Friday Night Flicks” series. Admission is free.

Saturday

The Jonesboro Farmer’s Market hosted by the University of Georgia’s Clayton County Extension Office will open for the 2013 at 8 a.m. in the city’s parking lot located across from the Jonesboro Fire House Museum and Community Center, 103 West Mill St. It will remain open until 12 p.m.

The Little Bulldogs Cheerleading Camp will be held from 10 a.m until 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion High School, 2535 Mount Zion Parkway, Jonesboro. The camp for children under 12 who will taught by the high school’s cheerleading squad. It costs $10 to sign-up and kids can be signed up on the day of the event, or by registering in advance at http://mzcheerevents.wix.com/booster.

“Scholar Works: How to Go To College” will be presented from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Headquarters Library Branch, 865 Battle Creek Road.

A “Saturday ‘Digging’ Movie” viewing will be held for children at 2:30 p.m. at the Jonesboro Library Branch, 124 Smith St. The scheduled movie is “Antz.”

A family glass painting craft session will be held from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m., at the Forest Park Library Branch, 4812 West St. Children over 6 will paint small glass bottles during the session. Advance registration is required. Call 770-347-0160 to sign up.

The Gridiron Stars of Tomorrow “Under the Light” Youth Football/Cheerleading Camp will be held from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Panhandle Park, 10930 Panhandle Road, Jonesboro. The camp is free to attend and is open to kids ages 6 to 17.
