RIVERDALE — Sabrina Davis said students travel urbanized stretches of asphalt in order to get to the greenhouse where they study how plants grow.

This month, they are trying to keep agriculture education a thriving part of the school curriculum through their annual spring fundraiser.

Davis is the agri-science instructor at Riverdale High School and advises the school’s Future Farmers of America organization. She is hoping to garner support for the organization through its spring plant sale, beginning March 25 until the plants are sold.

Davis said 150 students are enrolled in agriculture courses at Rivedale High, which has the school district’s last remaining agri-science program.

She teaches students that agriculture is not merely overalls and pitch forks. She said they learn it is about much more — science, biology, commerce and sustainability.

“At first, they look at it as just plants and animals but they begin to understand the concept of biology and science,” she said.

Jada Campbell, 15, said she learns something daily working in the school’s greenhouse. The sophomore is also volunteering as a member of FFA to help separate and re-pot greenhouse plants for the upcoming sale.

Students have grown more than 3,000 individual plants including rudbeckia, tomatoes and blooming ferns. Most are priced at $3 or $5.

Proceeds help supplement costs for FFA, which also competes in area and state competitions and attends off-campus enrichment programs.

“I want parents to come in and buy some of our plants,” she said. “We need the support of the community.”

Plants will be available during school hours at Riverdale High, 160 Roberts Drive in Riverdale. Davis can answer questions about the sale at 770-473-2905.
