Question: What was the highlight for you this season?
Coleman: “Wrestling in the state tournament was the best part of the season. It was amazing being on that type of stage in my final year. When you step on that mat in the state tournament, you feel like a top athlete. When the match first got started, I was a little nervous, but I felt ready.”
Q: How did you improve this season?
A: “I felt like my determination was alot better this season. I was able to accomplish what I wanted to do because I really dug deep and fought through a lot of adversity. I think I was able to finish matches this season because I didn’t let things bother me when it started to go bad. My conditioning was a lot better this season. I knew I had the skills and put in the extra work to reach my goal.”
Q: What was your biggest challenge?
A: “Fighting through injuries was tough. My ankle and wrist was hurting this season. I had some fluid on my knees, but I was able to push through it. In the past, I would like the pain bother me. I would never fight through it to finish strong. With this being my senior year, I was really determined to accomplish my goal of going to state.”
On Coleman
Vitals: The senior finished third in the 120-pound division in Class AAAA. This was the first season that he had qualified for the state tournament. He has received some interest from a couple colleges, but has yet to get an offer. He was the highest state placer this season in the county.
Why Coleman: He compiled a 62-8 record and third place overall finish in his weight class. This season’s resume includes a region and county title. Coleman also won the Sectionals title before advancing to the state meet.
Others considered: Scott Coleman, Calvin’s twin brother and Tavares Russ (Drew).
Coach Gene Johnson: “He was a very dedicated wrestler this season. I saw some tremendous improvement in Calvin this season. He had that determination and perseverance that had him dig deep to pull out the close matches. I can see him wrestling on the next level.”
