ATLANTA — Officials with the Internal Revenue Service estimate there is more than $917 million in unclaimed refunds for 984,400 taxpayers nationwide who did not file a 2009 federal income tax return.
IRS spokesman Mark Green said that amount includes $27 million in refunds unclaimed by roughly 31,000 Georgia residents. He said the median refund for Georgians is around $538.
“Time is running out if you want to get your refund,” said Green. “Taxpayers should review their 2009 statements for refundable credits and withholdings. We want all taxpayers to get the refund they’re due.”
He said that, in order to collect the money, a return for 2009 must be filed with the IRS no later than April 15. There is no penalty for filing a late return qualifying for a refund.
“In cases where a return was not filed, the law provides most taxpayers with a three-year window of opportunity for claiming a refund,” he said. “If no return is filed to claim the refund within three years, the money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury.”
E-file and paper returns are available at www.IRS.gov.
