Holston, Hampton to battle in 100 event

After two days of running prelims and field event finals, only two sprinters and a relay team are left in the county.

High jump: Imani Richards, Forest Park, 5-0, tied-fourth.

Triple jump: Bria Matthews, Forest Park, 39-2, second.

Long jump: Matthews, Forest Park, 17-4.5, sixth.

Discus: Kelsey Arnold, Jonesboro, 119-0, sixth.

High jump: Lorenda Holston, North Clayton, 5-2, fifth.

100-meter: Lorenda Holston, North Clayton; S’Kayia Hampton, Jonesboro.

North Clayton senior Lorenda Holston and S’Kayia Hampton of Jonesboro will battle for the last time on the high school level in the 100-meter event on Saturday in Albany.

The two seniors qualified for Saturday’s finals on Thursday in the prelims at Hugh Mills Stadium.

Holston, a Colorado State signee, had the second-best qualifying time in the event after sprinting 12.11 seconds on the track. Last season, she placed second in the 100 event.

Hampton had the seventh-best qualifying time in the event at 12.26 seconds.

The two have battled each other since middle school.

Jonesboro’s 400 relay team also survived the qualifying and will run in the finals. The foursome of Cierra Fulton, Jameka Smoot, Alexus Haskins and Hampton had a qualifying time of 48.64 seconds for seventh place.

During Friday’s field event finals in Class AAAAA, Forest Park climbed as high as second in the standings. By the close of Friday’s field events finals, the Lady Panthers settled into sixth place.

Forest Park will try to hold on to that spot heading into Saturday’s running finals without any participants.

Bria Matthews of Forest Park was the highest placer in the field events. The sophomore placed second in the triple jump at 39-feet, two inches. She had a jump of 17-4.5 in the long jump to place sixth.

Teammate Imani Richards had a jump of 5-0 to finished tied at fourth in the high jump.

In Class AAAA, Holston finished tied for fifth with a jump of 5-2 in the high jump.

Kelsey Arnold of Jonesboro threw 119-0 to place sixth in the discus. She is a Georgia Southern signee.
