Jonesboro soccer coach Paul Cook will lead his team against top-ranked Dalton on Saturday.
JONESBORO — During the first two rounds of the Class AAAA boy’s soccer playoffs, Jonesboro has had to make trips to South and Middle Georgia.
Saturday, the Cardinals make the trek north to take on top-ranked Dalton in the quarterfinals.
While this is unfamiliar territory for the Jonesboro team, Dalton is in the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year. The Region 7-AAAA Catamounts are 19-0 on the season and ranked No. 1 in Eurosportscoreboard.com’s Class AAAA and all-classifications polls for Georgia, as well as a No. 1 national ranking by maxpreps.com.
Wednesday’s second round win over Johnson-Gainesville was the closest game of the season for the Cats, who have outscored their opponents 110-7 on the season.
Jonesboro defeated Veterans 2-0 on Wednesday and opened the tournament with a 2-1 overtime victory at Cairo, which is a five-hour trip near the Florida border.
The winner of Saturday’s match advances to the semifinals on Wednesday against the winner of Spalding and Alexander. Spalding is the Region 4-AAAA champion and Jonesboro is the No. 4 seed from that region.
