FOREST PARK — Some children will get a head start on kindergarten at Little Ones Learning Center this summer.
The center’s co-director, Wande Meadows, said it is one of more than a dozen centers in Clayton County that will host the Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning Summer Transition Program.
Bright from the Start is sponsoring 126 classrooms statewide to implement the six-week program that targets rising kindergartners who have not attended Georgia’s Pre-K or Head Start programs.
“It’s to make sure kids are on a level playing field with those who have had the opportunity to be in the Georgia Pre-K Program,” said Meadows.
The program is from June 3 until July 12 each weekday from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
“It’s not a baby-sitting service,” she said. “There is a heavy parental involvement component once a week, on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Childcare will be provided free of charge during that time.”
The learning center, at 993 Forest Ave. in Forest Park, has 16 slots available for the summer transition program.
Meadows said applicants must also meet income eligibility requirements and register in person.
The registration deadline is May 31 and requires specific documents, including the child’s birth certificate, income verification and proof of residency. She said the requirements are similar to those for registration in public school kindergarten programs.
