Library system seeking teen volunteers

— As the school years winds down and students thoughts shift toward a summer of play, the Clayton County Library System is asking teens to consider spending a few more months hanging around books.

The system has announced it is accepting applications from middle and high school students interested in volunteering for two to three hours at a time at the libraries this summer. Because there are a limited number of positions, not every applicant is expected to be chosen.

The volunteers will mainly help with each library’s youth services department, doing “easy shelving” of books, assisting staff during programs and registering children for the system’s Summer Reading Program, said library system Assistant Director for Youth Services Janice Arcuria. The volunteers will also help staff handle reading records updates for the summer program, she added.

Arcuria pointed out the experience can be beneficial when college recruiters and employers see it on applications.

Teens interested in applying to be a volunteer are asked to contact the youth services departments at their nearest library.
