Helen Marie Sharp, 80, passed away May 20, 2013, at Sacred Journey Hospice, McDonough, Ga. The funeral mass will be Saturday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church, 591 Flint River Road, Jonesboro, with visitation at 9:30 a.m. in the church.
Helen was born and raised in Eveleth, Minn. She was a graduate of the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minn., where she received her degree in nursing. For a time, she was a head nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, Minn. Later, Helen joined the U.S. Air Force and served 12 years on active duty attaining the rank of captain. During the Vietnam War, Helen was stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippines treating critically-wounded troops from the war zone. In 1973, while stationed in England, she met and married Capt. Tom Sharp. After leaving active duty, they lived and worked for 10 years in the Philadelphia area and moved in 1986 to their home in Jonesboro, Ga. Helen was employed as a nurse at Southern Regional Medical Center and later at Henry Medical Center until her retirement in 1994. Helen was a devout Catholic her entire life, playing the organ at mass as a young girl to serving as a lector in later years.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Jenny Shukle, and is survived by her husband, Tom; sister Marcia (Jerry) Shukle Baland; several nieces and nephews, and cousins.
