Memorial Day weekend gets into full swing today

— Memorial Day events abound in Clayton County during the upcoming holiday weekend.

While families will likely have cookouts Monday, they will also have opportunities to enjoy concerts to pay tribute to fallen service men and women on Saturday and Sunday.

Memorial Day was established in the late 19th century as a time to remember soldiers who died during the Civil War. Deceased veterans of all wars are now remembered on the holiday. It was formally recognized as a federal holiday as part of the National Holiday Act of 1971.

In all, there are three Memorial Day-related events scheduled to take place in the county this weekend.

Those events along other non-holiday-related activities include:

Today

The Brookdale Dine and Dance Club will meet at 6 p.m. at the Jim Huie Recreation Center, 9045 Tara Blvd., Jonesboro. The group is for residents over 55 and visitors are asked to bring a dish for a potluck dinner held at the beginning of the meeting. After dinner, at about 6:45 p.m., attendees will begin dancing. Admission is $5 for the dancing.

Saturday

An American flag ceremony will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Jonesboro City Cemetery, at the corner of Johnson and Irvin streets. During the ceremony, Mayor Joy Day and members of Jonesboro City Council, American Legion Post 258, Boy Scout Troop 136, Cub Scout Pack 543 and the public will place American flags on the graves of veterans.

A free family movie viewing of “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” will be held at the Jonesboro Library Branch Saturday from 2:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. The library is at 124 Smith St.

A Memorial Day Celebration featuring the Contagious Band will be held at Clayton County International Park’s Lakeview Amphitheater Saturday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Gates to the amphitheater will open an hour before the concert begins and a fireworks show will take place at dusk. Admission to the park is $10 per car.

Sunday

A free Memorial Day concert will be held Sunday at 5 p.m. at Friendship Community Church at 4141 Old Fairburn Road in College Park. The event will include violinist Delores Major and gospel music artists James Fortune and Fiya, and Harold Halloway and Company. Comedian Mike Goodwin will also perform. Admission is free.
