Babb Middle School student receives academic scholarship

FOREST PARK — Babb Middle School student Carlene Burris recently earned a $500 academic scholarship from Bowen and Watson Contractors, which is working on renovations at the school.

Officials said the general contracting company’s representatives were so impressed with the faculty and students, they decided to award an academic scholarship to a deserving student. Burris was chosen and awarded the scholarship.

Eddie White Academy Beta Club tours NYC

Members of the Eddie White Academy Beta Club received a guided tour of New York City recently. It included such sites as Rockefeller Center, Bill’s Burgers, Little Italy and Puglia’s. Day two began with a visit to the Empire State Building, Museum of Natural History, Central Park, Skylight Diner and Broadway Theater.

Students also visited the Sony Technology Lab, Sylvia’s Restaurant, Financial District, African Burial Ground, the 9/11 Memorial, the Museum of Mathematics, Madison Square Garden and Harlem.

Summer Studio registration extended to June 1

The Art Institute of Atlanta has extended the registration deadline to June 1 for its Summer Studio.

Organizers said the camp program, June 17-21, is designed to give students a hands-on, collaborative environment where they learn new skills in the fields of design, culinary, media arts and fashion.

It is open to high school juniors and offers the following workshops: advertising, audio production, culinary arts, digital filmmaking and video production, fashion and retail management, game art and design, graphic and web design, illustration, interior design, media arts and animation and photographic imaging.

Jo Ann Koch is the president of The Art Institute of Atlanta. She said campers will learn under the direction of Art Institute of Atlanta faculty.

“At Summer Studio, students have the unique opportunity to share their creative passion with like-minded peers, receive feedback from our instructors and get a taste of the college experience,” she said.

Army Spec. Aisha Jones has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. Jones, the daughter of Jacqueline Edwards of Conley, earned a bachelor’s degree in 2008 from Georgia State University.
