JONESBORO — Only a few hundred voters have cast ballots on the countywide referendum to impose a 1-cent sales tax for education.
Clayton County voters are being asked to approve the fifth installation of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, a sales tax to provide auxiliary funding for necessary school projects such as school construction and renovations, textbook and transportation purchases, and technology and security upgrades.
The current SPLOST IV expires Dec. 31, 2014, ending its five-year lifespan. SPLOST V is projected to collect a maximum $280.25 million over five years, beginning Jan. 1, 2015, if approved at the ballot box.
Elections and Registration Director Annie Bright said participation has been low so far on the countywide issue.
Clayton County has 123,633 active voters, but only 442 ballots were cast by early Thursday morning, said Bright. The number includes this week’s in-person advance voting, at 372, and mail-in absentee voting, at 72.
“It’s been a very light turnout as expected for a special election,” said Bright, noting advance voting will end at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Advance voting is available at the Elections and Registration Office, 121 S. McDonough St. in downtown Jonesboro.
Polls will open at all 58 voting precincts Tuesday, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Bright said peak times for voting, when lines are fullest, are between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., and 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Eligible voters will be allow to vote as long as they are in line by 7 p.m.
She added that some residents should be reminded of two precinct changes.
Bright said Precinct No. 4 and Precinct No. 7 in Riverdale have moved. The old Riverdale Elementary School precinct on Camp Street closed and was moved to Harper Elementary School, 93 Valley Hill Road SW. The Flint River Center precinct was closed and was moved to the new Riverdale Elementary School, 6253 Garden Walk Blvd.
Those voters were notified by letter and received new voter registration cards, she said. The notification is on the board of elections website and will be posted at the old precincts.
Bright advises voters who are not sure if they are properly registered or are unsure where to vote to contact the Elections and Registration Office at 770-477-3372.
