Jonesboro group hosts toy drive Nov. 30

JONESBORO — Donations of unwrapped toys will be accepted from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Nov. 30 at Aaron’s Rental on Ga. Highway 85 in Riverdale.

Rose Faison, fundraiser coordinator of Faith Open Door Community Center, said toys should be appropriate for kids ages 2 to 19.

The center will distribute the toys during two Christmas parties, she said. The first will be Dec. 14 for children up to 12.

“We’re going to be feeding the entire community that day, too,” she said. “Everyone is invited to come eat with us.”

The second party will be Dec. 19 for kids ages 13 to 19.

Teachers at Mount Zion High School are sponsoring 17 children from the center by buying them Christmas gifts, Faison said.

The center, which is a nonprofit organization, provides mentoring classes for boys and girls to age 22 Mondays from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., step and dance classes, Taekwondo, Teen Outreach Program or Teens Inspiration, basketball practice and leadership classes.

The center, operating from 213 Arrowhead Boulevard, suites F and G, is also collecting donations toward a new building, Faison said, adding that the center will be sending military boxes to American soldiers in Afghanistan starting Dec. 2 so donations of toiletry items will be collected through Nov. 30.
