JONESBORO — Landry Merkison will be installed Dec. 6 as Clayton County’s fourth fire chief in less than three years.

The ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. at the Clayton County Board of Commissioners board room at 112 Smith St. in Jonesboro.

Merkison was serving as assistant chief when Chief Jeff Hood retired July 19. However, commissioners appointed Dwayne Jackson to serve as interim while a search for a permanent chief continued.

Hood was appointed interim chief Christmas Day 2010 after former Chief Alex Cohilas left the position he’d held for years to work for the Board of Commissioners in an administrative role.

Hood got the permanent nod in April 2011 but retired two years later.

The event is open to the public.
