Rec officials merge fall festival, after school rally

Extravaganza planned for Rex on Saturday

REX — Clayton County parents will not be able learn about Clayton County after school programs Thursday after all.

That’s because they’ll be doing it Saturday instead.

Although the date for the county’s “Lights on Afterschool” rally had originally been scheduled for Thursday, county parks and recreation officials had decided to roll into Saturday’s Fall Festival, which they are hosting with Commissioner Sonna Singleton.

The move was part of a decision by parks and recreation officials to roll several events planned for this weekend into one massive fall celebration. That, in turn, will ensure greater exposure for after school programs in the county.

“This is a special time of year when observation and support for after school programs are recognized around the country,” a statement from the recreation department said. “We know how vital these programs are in keeping our children safe and in a productive environment while school is out.”

The festivities will last from 2 to 6 p.m., at Rex Park, which is behind the Carl Rhodenizer Recreation Center, 3499 Rex Road in Rex. The combined event will feature the rally, face painting, moonwalks, games, a rock-climbing wall, food and a Halloween costume contest.

The rally and the festival will not be the only activities taking place that day. The festivities will be capped off with an installment of the recreation department’s Movies Under the Stars series, with a viewing of “Hotel Transylvania” at 9 p.m.

All of the festivities are free to attend, and the public is encouraged to attend. Attendees staying for the movie are also encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on and snacks to eat during the viewing.
