Lake City early voter turnout low so far

LAKE CITY — It’s been all quiet on the Lake City front this election season.

As Clayton County’s smallest city, Lake City has a certain small town next to the big city quality. However, while many things in a small town typically move at a snail’s pace, elected and community leaders probably don’t like to see voter turnout follow that pattern.

Nevertheless, that’s what Lake City has experienced during the early voting period for this year’s city council elections, said city officials.

By late Wednesday, 25 Lake City residents had come by to cast early ballots in the city council elections, said City Manager Joel Lanken. He said two more people have cast absentee ballots. With 1,230 registered voters in Lake City, that equates to a 2 percent turnout for the election so far.

Political newcomer Bobbie Hamilton and incumbent council members J.B. Sowell and Yvonne Kelly are running for two at-large council seats this year.
