HAMPTON — Beginning in 2014 Atlanta Motor Speedway is banning smoking in the grandstands for all events.
“We’re following the lead of many other major sporting venues in the area,” said Dustin Bixby, Marketing and Promotions manager for AMS.
Bixby said there will be designated smoking areas throughout the facility so smokers will not have the leave the track to smoke.
“We’re really concerned about confined people spaces,” Bixby said. “You can’t really keep the smoke to yourself.”
While the track has not nailed down exact locations for designated smoking areas yet, Bixby said there will be several places and signs directing smokers to areas in the concourse.
Ushers will also be available to help direct people.
For next year’s NASCAR race, Bixby said smoking will be allowed in the Fan Zone at gate 15, an area in the parking lot where fans can hang out, buy souvenirs and get food. Smoking will also be allowed in the campgrounds and in the infield.
“Pretty much anywhere there’s open areas people will be allowed to smoke,” Bixby said.
Though this ban may be new to AMS, the track has hosted other nonsmoking events in the past.
“We recently had a road rally race so this won’t be our first time,” Bixby said.
Bixby said it’s a challenge to accommodate everybody but banned smoking is pretty standard.
“A lot of people are already used to this so it shouldn’t be a big problem.”
The first event schedule for AMS in 2014 on www.atlantamotorspeedway.com is the Atlanta Motorama in April.
