JONESBORO — It was games like this that Eagle’s Landing found ways to lose last season on the way to a one-win record.

On Friday at Tara Stadium, the Golden Eagles found a way to win the close game.

Much of it had to do with an improved defense, and the running of seniors Corey Holloway and Sederick Palmer in the second half.

The biggest run for the Golden Eagles came on a third-and-one play with 1:38 remaining. Holloway went up the middle for a first down, which helped seal a 35-29 win on Friday.

With the win, Eagle’s Landing is now 3-1 overall as Jonesboro fail to 1-3.

Palmer and Holloway had some good runs in the first half, but for the most part was pretty much contained by the Jonesboro defense.

The third quarter was a different story.

Each scored a touchdown to help the Golden Eagles overcome a fourth-quarter deficit. It was a 33-yard run by Holloway with 6:28 remaining in the fourth quarter that provided the winning score.

From there, the defense held a determined Jonesboro team out of the end zone. Tyler Guice, who had a critical two-point conversion reception after Holloway’s touchdown run, recorded a sack on a key third down play by the Golden Eagles.

With his team trailing 29-22 in the third quarter, Palmer scored on a 4-yard run up the middle to cap a three-play drive. Eagle’s Landing two-point conversion failed as it trailed 29-28 with 1:55 remaining in the third quarter.

The Golden Eagle’s scoring drive was setup by an interception by Bradley Dewberry, who returned the ball to the Cardinals’ 27. The ball was moved to the 16 when Jonesboro was flagged with a 15-yard horse collar penalty on the interception.

Dewberry, who is also the team’s quarterback, was the star of the first quarter.

Dewberry accounted for all of Eagle’s Landing first-half scoring as the Golden Eagles took a 22-15 lead into halftime. The senior quarterback had his hand in all three touchdowns — two rushing and one passing.
