HAMPTON — If football doesn’t work out, Preston Williams always has his modeling career to fall back on.
Williams and his cousin, Kyron Melvin, started the Crazy 8 Models, which features runway modeling.
And Williams seems the perfect body type with a lean 6-foot-5 frame.
But there is no question that he potentially has a bright future in the game of football. The junior already has college scholarship offers from schools like Tennessee, Ohio State, Arkansas, Georgia and Florida State among his hottest pursuers.
Over the weekend, he committed to Tennessee. He becomes the third player in the Southern Crescent to commit to Tennessee this season. During the summer, Locust Grove safety Cortez McDowell committed to the Vols, and Eagle’s Landing Christian defensive back Bryson Durden accepted a preferred walk-on offer from the SEC school.
Former Jonesboro standout Cameron Sutton is a starting defensive back this season as freshman for the program.
Williams still has another year of high school football. He is leading the fourth-ranked Wildcats offense with 20 receptions for 420 yards and four touchdowns. This past weekend, he had the game-winning catch in the Wildcats’ come-from-behind win over East Coweta in a non-region game.
Williams is enjoying a productive junior season after missing the majority of the 2012 season with an injury.
“I wouldn’t say I’m making up for last season, I’m just trying to help my team win a state championship,” Williams said.
Entering Thursday’s game against Region 2-AAAAAA foe, Williams has 20 receptions for 420 yards and four touchdowns.
“He just goes out and get the job done,” Lovejoy offensive coordinator Craig Chatman said. “One thing that gets overlooked about Preston is his blocking. He has been a beast blocking for us.”
While he has made up his college choice, Williams gives a rundown of the top five he had considered:
Tennessee: “I just felt really welcomed and comfortable up there. I think I would have a shot to play my freshman season. Their coaching staff is a lot like ours at Lovejoy. It was just a good feeling being around the program.”
Alabama: “My dad (Antonio Williams) is an alumni so they have taken me in. I really enjoyed talking to Nick Saban. I really took to him. Because it is my dad’s school, I have to take a visit.”
Florida State: “I really like the atmosphere down there and its Florida. I missed their camp this year, but I’m planning on going next year. I really like their offense because they throw the ball around.”
Ohio State: “I really love their coaches. I talk to them every week. It is one of the top programs in the country. I think it would be a good experience taking a visit up there.”
Arkansas: “Ryan Mallett and Darren McFadden were my favorite players when they were in college. I followed them a lot during their careers at Arkansas. I want to take a visit up their to see what their campus is like. I’m planning on going to their camp this summer.”
UCLA: “I’ve never been to Los Angeles. That is a place that I would love to visit. With my modeling career, that would be the perfect place.”
