Forest Park announces Gillem celebration plans

FOREST PARK — Officials from Forest Park and the U.S. Army plan to come together and celebrate the city’s acquisition of the former Fort Gillem site Friday.

Mayor David Lockhart and Assistant Secretary of the Army Katherine Hammack sent out invitations this week for a ceremony that will symbolically represent the transfer of the old fort to city’s Urban Redevelopment Agency. The city has been working for years to acquire the land, which will total 770 acres, so it can be redeveloped as a business park.

The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at the front entrance of the former First Army Headquarters building on the Gillem property. Attendees are asked to enter the property through the Moreland Avenue gate.
