JONESBORO — Former Clayton County Senior Services Director Mary Byrd pleaded guilty this morning to stealing more than $16,000 from county programs aimed at seniors and grandparents raising grandchildren.

Byrd was remanded to the custody of the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office to begin serving her two-year prison sentence immediately after the hearing in Superior Court. Judge Matthew Simmons allowed Byrd to plead guilty under the First Offender Act.

She will serve a year on probation after she is released from prison.
