JONESBORO — There was no team championship that emerged from the recent traditional area meet, but 30 wrestlers earned a berth into this weekend’s state Sectional matches.
Morrow saw a county-leading eight wrestlers advance to the Class AAAAAA Sectionals at Lowndes High in Valdosta on Friday. Forest Park had the second-most with eight wrestlers participating at the Class AAAAA Sectionals at Allatoona High in Acworth.
Leading the way for Forest Park, the three-time county traditional champion, is Anthony Vasta, who won the 113-pound division. Vasta won by default over Juan Harvey of Whitewater. Placing second for the Panthers was Khawhn Johnson at 138.
As a team, Forest Park finished fifth at the Area 4-AAAAA Championship with Ola taking first with 232 points. Whitewater was second at 194.5 points and Union Grove was third with 190 points. Starr’s Mill had 145 points for fourth with Forest Park two points behind at 143. Other county teams Mundy’s Mill placed eighth with 42 points followed by Drew with 40 points and Mount Zion was 10th with 22 points.
In the Area 4-AAAA meet held at Locust Grove, Jonesboro was the top county finisher at fourth place with 99 points. Host Locust Grove was first with 214.5 points while Upson-Lee placed second with 193 points and Spalding was third with 128 points.
Jonesboro was led by first place finishes by Jalaal Malik at 126 and Jermaine Millens at 138. Chris Boggs of Jonesboro runner-up in the 182 division.
Riverdale only had one Sectional qualifier, but Jerry Trejada placed second in the 170 division.
All wrestlers from the Area 4-AAAA meet will advance to the Sectionals at Lanier High in Buford.
As a team, Morrow placed fifth with 120 points while Lovejoy was seventh with 70 points. Rockdale won the Area 2-AAAAAA Tournament with 262.5 points and host Alcovy was second with 217 points. Rounding out the top four was Newton at third with 151 points and Luella had 134.5 points to finish fourth.
Morrow had three runner-up finishes with Rydell Tomas (138), Orlando Kinsey (195) and Zavion Williams (285). Also, Tyler Lewis was third at 152 for the Mustangs, who finished as county runner-up at the duals and traditional tournaments earlier this season.
Queryachi Taylor of Lovejoy was runner-up at the 182 division. The sophomore is a two-time county traditional champion.
The top eight wrestlers at the Sectionals advance to the state meet on Feb. 13-15 at the Center at Gwinnett Arena in Duluth.
