RIVERDALE — A teenager faces several charges after police said he detonated a homemade device late Wednesday night.
Residents in the 8000 block of Cedar Bend Court in Riverdale were evacuated as a precaution, said Clayton County police Officer Ron Coloma.
The 16-year-old, who was not identified, has been charged with possession or manufacture of a destructive device, reckless conduct and explosive materials, said Coloma. Officials said there was smoke damage to the kitchen, nothing structural.
The teenager was taken into custody and later released to his parents. Clayton County Juvenile Court officials said the boy’s mother called police only to scare him and didn’t want him locked up. Officials said the mother was OK with him being in the home.
Officers responded to a bomb threat on Cedar Bend Court about 11 p.m. When they arrived on the scene, officers learned the boy already detonated the device.
Bomb-sniffing dogs were taken to the scene, said Coloma. No one was reported hurt.
Coloma said the investigation is ongoing.
