JONESBORO — The Front Porch Players performance of “The Miracle Worker” is getting attention outside of Georgia.

Alabama state Rep. Johnny Mack Morrow and his wife, Martha Morrow, recently visited to see the performance.

Part of Morrow’s district includes Ivy Green — Helen Keller’s home.

“My husband was so impressed with the production,” Martha Morrow said.

Johnny Morrow liked it so much, he invited actors Anna Fontaine and Megan McKneely to participate in Camp Courage in Alabama.

Fontaine plays teacher Annie Sullivan and McKneely portrays student Helen Keller, who was hearing and vision impaired but learned sign language from Sullivan. Keller went on to write books and became an inspiration to people, with and without disabilities, all over the world.

The camp is for children with vision or hearing disabilities.

“The camp’s mission is to inspire and create hope for children facing obstacles created by disabilities,” Martha Morrow said. “Our purpose is to show the inspiration and courage of Helen Keller, how with guidance from her teacher, Anne Sullivan, one person can make a difference in a life , in another’s life, and in society despite disabilities.”

Fontaine and McKneely will travel to Alabama Sept. 11-14 to attend Camp Courage and act out a scene for campers and guests.

“We’re just so excited about this,” said theater Director Karen Ferrell-White.

The theater group has three more scheduled performances — Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Shows are at the First Presbyterian Church of Jonesboro, 1842 Lake Jodeco Road.

Reserved seating is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $10 for children. General admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for children. Tickets can be purchased at www.thefrontporchplayers.com or call 770-897-1404.
