LOCUST GROVE — This is usually when you start to realize that football season isn’t far away. When the 7-on-7 passing leagues begin in earnest, they serve as signposts of Friday Night Lights’ soon arrival. At Locust Grove’s Warren Holder Park, the intensity and bragging rights were in midseason form during the seventh annual Southside Shootout 7-on-7 tournament.

Fifteen Southern Crescent area teams — mostly from Henry and Clayton counties — competed in one of the most popular 7-on-7 leagues in the south metro Atlanta area. Included were 2013 Class AAAA champion Griffin, back-to-back quarterfinal finisher Stockbridge and four-time region champion Lovejoy.

The Clayton News Daily’s Gabriel Stovall was on hand to capture some action from the two-day tournament.
